Haystack Rock Tide Pools (Cannon Beach, Oregon) and Good Tide Times

Haystack Rock is one of the most popular tidepool destinations on the Oregon coast. At lower tides, the ocean recedes to reveal a fascinating intertidal world filled with sea stars, sea anemones, hermit crabs, and other marine life around the base of the iconic sea stack. The beach is easily accessible from downtown Cannon Beach, making it one of the best places to experience Oregon's tide pools.

The best viewing generally occurs when the tide is below about 1 foot, with the most extensive tide pools exposed during negative tides. The table below shows the estimated times when the tide is expected to be below this level based on nearby NOAA tide predictions. Planning your visit around these lower tides gives you the best chance to see marine life and safely explore the exposed rocky shoreline. Note that water levels are affected by weather, such as wind & waves, which are not reflected in tide predictions (so it's also best to visit when the weather is good).

While visiting, be careful on wet rocks, watch for incoming waves, and help protect this fragile habitat by avoiding contact with tidepool animals. The area is managed as a protected marine garden, and respecting the wildlife helps preserve it for future visitors.

Local agencies recommend using tides from the nearby Columbia River Entrance (North Jetty) in Washington. Those are the tides used in the table below.

* Tides are predictions, and actual water levels can vary based on weather and other conditions. Also make sure you check the low tide heights for the times you’re planning.
